By remaking significant artworks from the canon of Western art history I aim to interrogate the fundamental and recurrent themes that formed a virile ideology. This re-telling is expressed through a non-traditional art practice that combines recycled and repurposed media, the waste of capitalism, to represent the renewal of outdated imagery and ideas associated with the Western art canon. Similarly, and in recognition of traditional female accomplishments, embroidery methods such as stitching, binding and wrapping are incongruously combined with materials like paint, oil stick and charcoal to create unexpected but cohesive works. This transcription process assists in identifying the formal qualities of historical artworks however, the allegory, symbolism and social meaning are my principal concern. The intersection of salvaged waste with paternalistic subject matter prompts further questions surrounding the relationship between capitalism and patriarchy.
